Aito, the electric vehicle brand jointly developed by Huawei and Seres Group, will introduce battery electric vehicle (BEV) versions of its M8 SUV in August, expanding its lineup amid rising competition in China’s large all-electric SUV market.
The new BEV models will follow closely on the heels of major launches by rivals, including Li Auto’s Li i8 on July 29 and Onvo’s L90 later this month. Aito first unveiled the M8 in April with extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants, priced from RMB 359,800 ($50,150). Since then, the model has gained traction among Chinese buyers, with firm orders reportedly exceeding 80,000 units in just over a month.
The upcoming BEV variants will maintain the same dimensions as the EREV versions — 5,190 mm in length, 1,999 mm in width, and 1,795 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,105 mm — and offer both five- and six-seat configurations. Aito stated that the BEV models will feature Huawei’s Giant Whale 800-volt high-voltage platform, a 100-kWh CATL battery, and a CLTC range of up to 705 kilometers.
In terms of advanced driver-assistance systems, the M8 BEV will be equipped with Huawei-developed LiDAR technology, including a 192-channel main sensor, a rear solid-state LiDAR, and five 4D millimeter-wave radars. The system will support smart driving assistance, intelligent parking, and active safety features.
Aito highlighted that the new BEV model will include an extra-large frunk, a feature also promoted by Onvo in its L90 SUV. Richard Yu, Huawei’s executive director and chairman of the consumer business group, said the BEV version of the M8 will offer “better quietness, a frunk, and lower ownership costs,” adding another choice for family-oriented buyers.
The Aito M8 EREV is currently available with either 52-kWh or 36-kWh battery packs, offering battery ranges between 161 km and 240 km, and a combined fuel-electric range of up to 1,526 km. The pure electric M8 will join an increasingly crowded market where long-range BEVs are becoming the latest competitive benchmark.
