Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport has introduced 20 new electric vehicle (EV) charging bays, the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) said, expanding public access to charging infrastructure at the busy airport.

The chargers, installed on the ground floor of the airport’s International Parking Structure, are Level 2 AC units with standard Type 1 (J1772) connectors, designed for slower, long-duration charging. They are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Payment is managed via the OpConnect mobile app, while standard airport parking fees also apply. Rates vary by time of day, with charging priced at $0.44 per kilowatt-hour from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and $0.57 per kilowatt-hour from 5 p.m. to 9 a.m.

Ed Sniffen, HDOT Director, said: “The new charging stations offer EV drivers a convenient and reliable charging option while at the airport. Hawai’i consistently ranks among the top states for electric vehicle adoption, so it’s important that we continue to invest in charging infrastructure that supports the electrification of our transportation system.”

The project cost $539,000, covering both hardware and installation. While public access is open, the combination of charging and parking fees may make use most practical for travelers or airport visitors planning extended stays.
