Honda has confirmed Alpha as the final name of its first electric vehicle developed for the Indian market, with the electric SUV scheduled to make its global debut in India on December 2. The model, derived from the 0 α concept presented at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, will enter a competitive segment that includes electric SUVs from Hyundai, Mahindra, Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki and Toyota.
The vehicle will be produced at Honda’s manufacturing facility in Tapukara, Rajasthan, which is currently the company’s only operational car plant in India. Honda is also considering exports to selected international markets, including Japan and Southeast Asia.
Alpha Moves Forward as Honda’s First India-Focused EV
The Alpha originated from Honda’s 0 α, a near-production prototype introduced as part of the automaker’s 0 Series electric vehicle family.
The original 0 Series also included the 0 Saloon and 0 SUV, both unveiled at CES 2025. However, Honda cancelled the planned production versions of those two models in March, while continuing development of the 0 α.
With the removal of the numerical prefix from its production name, Alpha will effectively become a standalone model rather than part of the original 0 Series naming structure.
In terms of size and market positioning, the electric SUV is expected to be comparable to Honda’s global HR-V.
Two LFP Battery Options Planned
Honda is expected to offer the Alpha with two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack options, although the company has not yet disclosed their capacities or driving ranges.
According to comments from Toshikazu Hirose, Honda’s Large Project Leader and Chief Engineer for the model, the vehicle will have a wheelbase measuring between 2,700 mm and 2,800 mm, as reported by Autocar India.
A report by Kompas.com indicates that Honda will source the battery cells from CATL’s new manufacturing facility in Karawang, West Java, Indonesia. The reported supply arrangement has not been independently detailed by Honda.
Production Planned at Honda’s Rajasthan Facility
Honda began testing the Alpha on Indian public roads in March before expanding the development programme to Japan.
The production model is expected to retain much of the exterior design introduced with the 0 α prototype. Its styling features a futuristic profile inspired by the larger 0 SUV concept.
Test vehicles have also provided an indication of the interior layout, which appears different from Honda’s existing Indian-market models. The cabin is expected to feature a large tablet-style infotainment touchscreen integrated into the dashboard alongside a fully digital instrument cluster.
Manufacturing at Tapukara will support Honda’s plans to establish India as a production base for the electric SUV.
Honda Targets Exports to Japan and Southeast Asia
Beyond the domestic Indian market, Honda has previously indicated that it intends to produce the Alpha in both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive configurations.
A company spokesperson told TopElectricSUV.com during the unveiling of the 0 α that the final model was intended for export to Japan and Southeast Asian markets, including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.
However, Honda has not indicated plans to introduce the vehicle in North America, Europe, Australia or New Zealand.
Alpha Enters India’s Competitive Electric SUV Market
The Alpha will compete with several established and upcoming electric SUVs in India, including the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6, Tata Sierra.ev, Maruti Suzuki e Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella.
Its December 2 world premiere will provide further details about the production design, battery configurations and technical specifications as Honda prepares to enter India’s expanding electric passenger vehicle market.
