Hertz customers renting Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles can now enjoy the convenience of Tesla’s mobile app, enriching their rental experience. This update was shared by Tesla North America on their official communication platform, X (formerly Twitter).
The integration of Tesla’s mobile app provides Hertz renters with a host of functionalities previously exclusive to Tesla owners. As stated in Tesla’s announcement, this includes keyless lock/unlock capabilities through the phone, remote cabin preconditioning, real-time charge status monitoring, and more.
Furthermore, this integration offers an additional perk for users who have activated cloud-backed driver profiles in their personal Tesla vehicles. With this feature enabled, all user settings, including seat and mirror positions, are seamlessly transferred and applied to the rented Tesla. Tesla introduced cloud-backed driver profiles last year, simplifying the process of switching between different Tesla vehicles.

To connect their mobile app to a Hertz rental, drivers can easily scan a QR code displayed on the vehicle’s infotainment screen. The QR code is conveniently located alongside prompts like “use your phone as a key” and “scan this code to get started,” as demonstrated in Tesla North America’s accompanying video.
This integration marks another step in Tesla’s ongoing efforts to collaborate with rental companies and law enforcement agencies to tailor software solutions that meet industry-specific needs. The integration of the Tesla app in Hertz’s Tesla rentals represents the latest advancement in this endeavor.
Hertz made headlines in October 2021 when it announced its ambitious plan to purchase 100,000 Tesla Model 3 vehicles. Since then, the company has expanded its electric vehicle offerings by including thousands of Model 3 and Model Y cars, along with other electric vehicles like the Polestar 2, in its rental fleet. As of March 2023, Hertz reported having approximately 50,000 electric vehicles in its rental inventory.
