Hamburger Hochbahn AG has ordered 350 fully electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro buses from Daimler Buses, advancing its commitment to emission-free public transportation in the northern German city.
The buses are scheduled for delivery over the coming years as part of Hamburg’s broader strategy to convert its entire fleet to zero-emission vehicles by 2030.
The new order follows the deployment of 95 eCitaro buses already in service through vhh.mobility in Hamburg. Daimler Buses’ CEO Till Oberwörder described the development as a significant milestone for CO2-neutral transportation.
“Our battery-electric eCitaro city bus offers an excellent overall package: the modern, long-range electric drive ensures that passengers reach their destinations quietly and locally CO2-neutrally. Advanced assistance systems also increase safety in all road traffic conditions,” Oberwörder said in a statement.
Equipped with modular battery configurations ranging from 294 to 588 kWh, the eCitaro buses can be customized to meet specific operational needs. Representatives from Hamburger Hochbahn AG highlighted the vehicles’ low total cost of ownership (TCO) and ease of maintenance as key factors in their decision.
To support its zero-emission goals, Hamburger Hochbahn AG ensures that 100% of the energy used to charge its electric fleet is sourced from sustainable, green energy providers. “This order represents a decisive step towards achieving emission-free local transport in Hamburg,” a company spokesperson said.
The order cements Daimler Buses’ role as a key player in the electrification of public transport, as demand for sustainable mobility solutions grows across Europe.
