Hamburg’s municipal cleaning company has recently put the all-electric eEconic into operation, in a bid to reduce emissions and contribute to the city’s climate neutrality goal. At a press conference, the Environmental State Councilor Michael Pollmann, along with SRH Managing Director Professor RĆ¼diger Siechau and Franziska Cusumano, Head of Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks & Custom Tailored Trucks, handed the key over to “Kolonne 11” of the city cleaning department.
The eEconic, produced by Mercedes-Benz, is a locally CO2-neutral vehicle that offers a pleasant and quiet driving experience. The vehicle has been in series production since last year and is characterized by its low noise emissions, making it an ideal waste collection vehicle for urban areas, especially in the early hours of the morning.

Speaking at the press conference, Environmental State Councilor Michael Pollmann highlighted the importance of reducing noise pollution in a densely populated metropolis like Hamburg, and praised Stadtreinigung Hamburg for actively participating in sustainable solutions. He also noted that the coalition agreement of the government parties has firmly anchored the climate neutrality of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in 2040.
For SRH, the conversion of the fleet to alternative drives is one of the most important components of the climate neutrality already targeted for 2035. According to SRH Managing Director Prof. Dr RĆ¼diger Siechau, while the conversion of their fleet to alternative drives for cars and small vans is already well advanced, extensive testing under real operating conditions is required, especially for large commercial vehicles. However, he expressed confidence that a successful test of the eEconic will be a major step towards achieving the important goal of climate neutrality by 2035.
The eEconic features a level cab floor, making it easier to move through the cab, a particular advantage if the driver wants to get out on the side facing away from traffic. The vehicle also has a panoramic windscreen and a low seat position, with a coated and heated Thermocontrol windscreen that prevents weather-dependent misting of the screen, thus increasing the view of the traffic area. Additionally, the eEconic features the Sideguard Assist S1R and the 5th generation Active Brake Assist emergency braking assistant, making it a safe choice for urban traffic.

With the commitment of companies like Mercedes-Benz and SRH, it is clear that the transition to alternative drives is gaining momentum, and that significant progress is being made towards achieving climate neutrality.
