Gotion High-Tech Inaugural Battery Pack Production in the United States

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) battery developer Gotion High-Tech Co., Ltd. has achieved a significant milestone in its global expansion strategy by rolling out its inaugural battery pack from its newly established assembly line near Silicon Valley. This marks the company’s first product manufactured in the United States.

Specializing in battery research and development, as well as energy solutions, Gotion High-Tech, headquartered in China, continues to extend its production capabilities to various global regions. In addition to its recent venture into the United States, the company is currently expanding into Vietnam through a joint venture with VinES, the energy division of VinFast.

Gotion’s expansion efforts in the past year have included the commencement of battery assembly in Göttingen, Germany, representing its first product assembled in Europe. Furthermore, the company acquired a 25% stake in the Slovak electric vehicle (EV) battery startup InoBat, marking the first investment in a European startup by a Chinese battery manufacturer.

Beyond Southeast Asia and Europe, Gotion is actively expanding its battery operations in the United States. It has established an assembly facility in Fremont, California, and unveiled plans for a $2 billion EV battery plant in Illinois, announced in September.

Despite ongoing developments in Illinois, Gotion reached a significant milestone at its California facility by completing the first build of its battery pack product on December 21. This achievement aligns with the company’s “Made in USA” initiative, dating back to 2014 when it initially established a research and development presence near Silicon Valley.

The GenDome energy storage system, produced by Gotion in Fremont, is the company’s first product tailored specifically for the U.S. market. It signals the commencement of a forthcoming lineup of portable and residential energy storage products, featuring capacities ranging from 3 to 30 kWh.

Looking forward, Gotion’s Fremont facility will function as its innovation hub, supporting upcoming facilities in Michigan and Illinois. Li Chen, Senior Vice President and President of Gotion Americas Business, emphasized the company’s commitment to a three-in-one strategy focusing on localized research and development, manufacturing, and marketing. He expressed confidence in building a localized and diversified supply chain system characterized by a full value chain, with the Illinois battery factory and Michigan material factory playing integral roles.

Gotion’s Fremont battery pack factory is anticipated to achieve a production capacity of 1 GWh, with assembly lines operating at 85% automation.
