General Motors (GM) has emerged as the second-largest seller of electric vehicles (EVs) in the US in 2024, following Tesla, with a remarkable 125% surge in sales during the fourth quarter.
GM sold 43,982 EVs in Q4, bringing its total for the year to 114,432 units, a 50% increase from 2023. The company’s robust growth was driven by strong demand for new electric models such as the Chevy Equinox EV, Cadillac Lyriq, and Chevy Blazer and Silverado EVs.
The Chevy Equinox EV, which began deliveries in May 2024, was a key contributor, selling 18,089 units in Q4 alone and becoming one of the top five best-selling EVs in the US.
In addition to the Equinox, GM saw solid sales from other models, including the Cadillac Lyriq (8,084 units sold in Q4) and the GMC Hummer EV, which saw a 151% year-over-year increase, with 5,091 units sold in Q4. GM also launched new electric pickups, including the Cadillac Escalade IQ and GMC Sierra EV, further boosting the companyās EV sales performance.
GMās impressive growth was enough to nearly double its share of the US EV market to around 12% in Q4. Despite its strong showing, Fordās EV sales were also on the rise, with the company selling 97,865 electric vehicles in 2024, falling short of GMās total.
GMās sales gains come at a time when Tesla, the EV leader, missed expectations with 495,570 units delivered in Q4, bringing its total to just under 1.78 million vehicles in 2024, slightly below the previous year’s figures.
Looking ahead, GM is poised to continue its EV expansion with new models, including the Cadillac Vistiq and Optiq luxury SUVs, expected to hit the market in early 2025. GMās executive vice president, Rory Harvey, highlighted the companyās diverse offerings, saying, “We have something for everyone, no matter what they like to drive.”
