General Motors (GM) is set to launch the Chevy Blazer EV in Brazil, marking the start of a new electric vehicle (EV) campaign in Latin America’s largest auto market. This move aims to counter the rise of Chinese EV makers, particularly BYD, in the region.

The Blazer EV, one of GM’s most recognized models, was introduced in 2022 as part of Chevrolet’s next-generation EV lineup, alongside the Equinox and Silverado EVs. GM reported sales of 7,234 Blazer EVs in the first half of 2024, with 6,634 sold in the second quarter alone.

According to GM, the electric SUV is attracting new customers, with 40% of Blazer EV buyers coming from brands like Jeep, Ford, and Hyundai/Kia. As the Blazer EV gains popularity in the US, GM is now preparing to introduce it to the Brazilian market. Brazil, which ranked as the sixth-largest car market globally in 2023 with over 2.18 million new car registrations, is a strategic target for GM’s EV expansion.

“Modern cars have their own internet and more advanced electronic architecture,” said Plinio Cabral, GM’s South American Director of Electrical Engineering. This enables “systems that offer a more complete and personalized connectivity experience for the consumer,” he added.

The Chevy Blazer EV will launch in Brazil on August 1, 2024, according to GM Authority. GM announced the launch last week, stating that the Blazer EV “marks a new era for the brand” in Brazil. The RS model will be the first trim available in the Brazilian market, offering options such as eAWD with a range of 279 miles and RWD with a range of 324 miles.

The competition in Brazil is intensifying, particularly with BYD leading the EV transition. BYD sold nearly 15,000 electrified cars in Brazil in the first three months of 2024 and recently launched the Dolphin Mini, priced at around $20,000, making it one of the most affordable EV options in the country.

In the US, the Chevy Blazer EV starts at $50,195, with a range of up to 279 miles. With available tax credits, the price could drop to as low as $42,695.
