Germany produced around 1.22 million battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in 2025, marking a 15% increase from the previous year and underscoring the growing role of electric mobility in the country’s automotive sector, industry data showed.
According to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), total passenger car production in Germany reached 4.15 million units last year. Of that figure, BEVs accounted for about 29%, meaning more than one in four cars built domestically was fully electric. Production of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) stood at around 450,000 units, bringing combined electrified vehicle output to roughly 1.67 million units, or about 40% of total passenger car production.

The figures highlight the scale of Germany’s electrification push, though manufacturers do not disclose production volumes for individual electric models. Vehicles assembled in Germany include a wide range of models from brands such as Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Ford, Mini, Opel and Tesla, spanning compact cars, SUVs and premium sedans.
“Domestic production of electric vehicles has reached record levels, clearly demonstrating that the German automotive industry is leading the way in e-mobility and climate-neutral mobility,” said VDA President Hildegard Müller. She added that it was “crucial for policymakers to further improve framework conditions” to ensure long-term momentum, citing the need for expanded charging infrastructure, grid upgrades, more affordable electricity and secure access to critical raw materials.

On a global scale, the VDA said Germany ranked as the world’s second-largest producer of electric vehicles in 2025, behind China, which remained the dominant market. The United States ranked third, although its position could come under pressure following policy changes and a slowdown in electric vehicle investment by some major manufacturers.
Looking ahead, the VDA expects production of BEVs and PHEVs in Germany to rise by about 6% in 2026 to around 1.76 million units. The more moderate growth outlook partly reflects the fact that several upcoming electric models from German carmakers will be produced outside Germany, including new vehicles manufactured in Hungary and Spain.
