General Motors’ Super Cruise driver assistance system has been named the winner of MotorTrend’s inaugural “Best Tech Award,” recognizing its role in advancing hands-free driving technology.

The system, first introduced in 2017, allows for hands-free driving on pre-mapped roads and is set to expand its coverage to 750,000 miles across the U.S. and Canada by late 2025.

MotorTrend launched the new award series to highlight innovative technologies that enhance the driving experience. “MotorTrend said it launched the new awards to celebrate groundbreaking technologies and innovations that redefine the driving and vehicle ownership experience,” the publication stated. Super Cruise was recognized for its ability to combine driver convenience with safety measures, reinforcing its position as a leader in advanced driver assistance systems.

Since its debut, Super Cruise has undergone continuous improvements, integrating lane-keeping assistance and adaptive speed control. However, features such as Automatic Lane Change and Lane Change on Demand are unavailable while towing, prioritizing safety.

General Motors emphasizes that while the system allows hands-free driving, driver attention remains necessary. “Always pay attention while driving and when using Super Cruise. Do not use a hand-held device,” the company advises.

Super Cruise is currently available on more than 20 General Motors models, with customers logging hundreds of millions of miles using the system. As the technology expands to more roads and vehicles, General Motors continues to position itself at the forefront of driver assistance innovation.
