General Motors is laying off close to 1,000 employees worldwide, primarily in the United States, as the automaker continues efforts to streamline its operations and cut costs, a source told Reuters on Friday. GM confirmed the layoffs in a statement, though it declined to specify the total number of jobs affected.

“In order to win in this competitive market, we need to optimize for speed and excellence,” the Detroit-based company said. “As part of this continuous effort, we’ve made a small number of team reductions.”

The layoffs include 507 employees at GM’s tech center in Warren, Michigan, according to a state filing. This follows earlier job cuts, including over 1,000 software-related positions in August and 1,700 layoffs at a Kansas manufacturing plant in September. These efforts are part of GM’s broader strategy to reduce $2 billion to $4 billion in electric vehicle (EV) losses in 2025 while advancing its ambitions as a leader in EVs and automotive software development.

Detroit automakers and global car companies have faced mounting pressure to manage costs as they transition to EV production and compete with Tesla and Chinese automakers. Stellantis laid off thousands of salaried and hourly workers this year, including 2,450 at a Michigan plant and 1,100 at an Ohio facility. Ford Motorscaled back production at its F-150 Lightning electric pickup plant in Michigan, idling operations through the end of the year due to weaker-than-expected EV demand.

The challenges are not limited to U.S. automakers. Nissan and Volkswagen have also warned of significant layoffs as the global automotive industry grapples with the high costs of EV production and shifting market dynamics.
