GAC Group’s sub-brand Hyptec has introduced the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) version of its HL SUV, adding another hybrid model with a high-capacity battery pack to China’s competitive new energy vehicle market.

The Hyptec HL EREV, the first to feature GAC’s Xingyuan extended-range system, is available in four trims with starting prices from RMB 269,800 ($37,540) to RMB 299,800. The vehicle comes standard with a 60-kWh nickel-cobalt-manganese battery supplied by CATL, delivering a CLTC electric-only range of 350 km. Combined with a 1.5-liter range extender engine, the SUV achieves a CLTC range of 1,369 km, while consuming 6.7 liters of fuel per 100 km when operating without battery power.

Equipped with 800V 5C fast-charging capability, the HL can add 210 km of range with just 10 minutes of charging. Its electric motor produces up to 250 kW of power and 430 Nm of torque, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds. The model is available in both five- and six-seat layouts but comes only in rear-wheel drive.

The Xingyuan system, developed in-house by GAC, incorporates the fourth-generation 1.5 DHE engine. The company said fuel consumption under the system is as low as 3.3 liters per 100 km for an A-class sedan and 5.3 liters for a large SUV. Hyptec previously launched the HL battery electric variant in April, with deliveries beginning later that month.

The new model enters a growing segment of extended-range vehicles with large-capacity batteries, following IM Motors’ updated LS6, which uses CATL’s Freevoy Max battery pack. More EREV launches are expected, with filings showing that Hyptec is preparing extended-range versions of the A8 sedan and Aion V SUV.
