Formula E Transforms Old Racecar Parts into Sculpture Advocating Climate Action

Formula E, the pioneering electric racing series, has taken a creative step towards promoting sustainable practices and environmental awareness. In a powerful testament to the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle, the organization unveiled a thought-provoking sculpture crafted from retired components of its previous generation racecars. The art piece serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of embracing circular manufacturing systems in today’s world.

Renowned British artist Charles Elliot is the mastermind behind this unique creation, ingeniously assembling donated parts from each of the 11 teams that participated in the highly competitive 2022 Formula E season. The sculpture, measuring an impressive 8.2 feet (2.5 meters) in diameter, was revealed during the finale of the current Formula E season held in London. Poignantly, the unfinished globe-shaped sculpture is adorned with 11 figures, symbolizing the competing teams, while simultaneously drawing attention to crucial environmental concerns.

However, the figurines adorning the sculpture are deliberately crafted to resemble children, shedding light on the vulnerable demographic that is disproportionately affected by the looming threat of climate change. Positioned atop the incomplete globe, these childlike figures serve as a powerful visual representation of the proactive role that young individuals are assuming in the fight against climate change.

The remarkable sculpture is slated to be auctioned, with the proceeds directed towards UNICEF’s Safe and Healthy Environment Fund. The global organization is dedicated to fostering a world where every child can thrive in a secure, hygienic, and sustainable environment. The funds raised from the auction will fuel UNICEF’s initiatives in education and healthcare, aiming to uplift those who are most adversely impacted by the consequences of climate change.

Jon Sparkes, the Chief Executive of the UK Committee for UNICEF, highlighted the significance of young people’s involvement: “Children and young people play a key role in addressing climate-related risks by promoting environmentally sustainable lifestyles and setting an example for their communities. It is wonderful to see Children’s Planet, position children and young people, in their rightful place, at the center of the globe.”

Notably, Formula E stands as a trailblazer in the realm of sustainability, being the world’s first certified net-zero carbon sport since its inception. Moreover, it was the pioneering international sports organization to collaborate with UNICEF in its climate change endeavors.

Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative: “This stunning creation showcases the collective effort across the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship to support UNICEF’s vital work through its Safe and Healthy Environment Fund.” Through the creation of this compelling sculpture, Formula E continues to underscore its dedication to fostering a greener, more sustainable future and inspiring positive action in the face of global environmental challenges.
