Ford’s electric vehicle (EV) sales in the US increased by 41% in the first quarter of 2023, selling a total of 10,866 units. Despite the overall growth, the company’s Mustang Mach-E model saw a decline in sales, dropping by 19.7% compared to last year. The F-150 Lightning truck, however, sold 4,291 units, and the E-Transit had a significant increase in sales by 62.7%.
Despite Ford’s growth, General Motors (GM) managed to surpass them in EV sales for the quarter. GM’s popular Chevy Bolt EV and EUV models sold a record-breaking 19,700 units, making it the second-best seller in the US EV market behind Tesla. However, GM’s other EV models did not perform as well, with the Cadillac Lyriq selling only 968 units and only two Hummer EVs. Nevertheless, GM expects to sell a total of 70,000 Bolt EV/EUV models this year.
Although Ford and GM’s growth in EV sales are promising, they still have a long way to go to catch up to Tesla, which delivered a record-breaking 422,875 units in the first quarter. It is clear that Tesla still dominates the US EV market, and other automakers have much work to do to catch up.
As more and more consumers switch to electric vehicles, the competition in the EV market is likely to intensify. It will be interesting to see how Ford, GM, and other automakers adapt to this growing trend and how they will compete with Tesla in the future.
