Ford has revealed the Fathom as its first production model based on the Universal EV Platform, introducing a midsize electric pickup with a starting price of $29,945 including the U.S. destination fee.
Pre-orders for the electric pickup are scheduled to open in early 2027, as Ford prepares to expand its range of more affordable battery-electric vehicles.
Ford Targets New Electric Pickup Buyers
The Fathom has been developed for customers whose needs differ from those of traditional pickup buyers, with Ford saying the target audience influenced the vehicle’s engineering, packaging and pricing.
Kay Hart, general manager of Ford’s Model e division, said the company focused heavily on understanding the customer during development.
“The blueprint for Ford’s new midsize electric truck — from the engineering to its name — came from one place: a deep understanding of the person who would drive it,” Hart said.
Ford chose the Fathom name instead of adopting the alphanumeric naming convention commonly used in the automotive industry. The automaker said it wanted the electric pickup to have a distinct personality.
The word Fathom has historical links to measurement and understanding. A fathom originally referred to the span of a person’s outstretched arms and later became a nautical unit equivalent to six feet, or 1.83 metres. The word also means to understand something completely.

Electric Pickup Priced Below $30,000
Ford will offer the standard-range Fathom from $28,350 before the U.S. destination fee. With the $1,595 charge included, the starting price reaches $29,945 before taxes and registration costs.
The pricing keeps the electric pickup below Ford’s previously stated $30,000 target, including the destination charge.
The five-seat Fathom is expected to provide greater passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4 while remaining in the midsize pickup segment.
The electric truck will feature both a front trunk and conventional cargo bed, giving owners additional flexibility for carrying passengers, equipment and other loads.
Ford also plans to equip the Fathom with a large high-resolution central touchscreen, digital key functionality and bidirectional power capability.
Every Fathom will be BlueCruise-capable, with Ford’s hands-free driving system set to integrate with Apple Maps. The pickup will also support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Fathom Launches Ford’s Universal EV Platform
The electric pickup represents the first production application of Ford’s Universal EV Platform, which was unveiled in 2025 as the foundation for a new generation of lower-cost electric vehicles.
Ford has said the platform is designed to simplify vehicle production and significantly reduce manufacturing costs.
The automaker previously said the associated production system could reduce the number of parts per vehicle by 20% and fasteners by 25%. Assembly is expected to require 40% fewer workstations, while production time could be reduced by 15%.
Ford has yet to disclose full technical specifications for the Fathom, including detailed battery and powertrain information.
The company has positioned the electric pickup as the first of multiple models expected to use the Universal EV Platform, making the Fathom an important step in Ford’s strategy to develop more affordable electric vehicles.
Pre-orders are expected to begin in early 2027.
