In January, the Ford brand experienced a 3.6% year-on-year increase in overall U.S. vehicle sales, totaling 145,632 units. However, the company’s battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales registered a sluggish start to the year.

Last month, Ford sold 4,674 all-electric vehicles, reflecting an 11% decline from the same period last year and marking the lowest level since April 2023. Notably, this accounts for just 3.2% of the brand’s total volume, down from 5-6% in late 2023.

A closer look reveals that the primary reason for the BEV sales dip is the significant 51% year-over-year decrease in Ford Mustang Mach-E sales, amounting to 1,295 units. Conversely, the Ford F-150 Lightning experienced a marginal decline of 0.3% year-over-year, with 2,258 units sold. The Ford E-Transit van, however, exhibited growth with 1,121 sales, marking a substantial 214% year-over-year increase.

For reference, in 2023, Ford sold over 72,000 all-electric vehicles in the U.S., representing an 18% increase compared to 2022 and constituting about 3.8% of the brand’s total volume.

Despite the Ford F-150 Lightning recording 2,258 units in January, the company recently adjusted its 2024 pricing and production plan in response to the challenging market situation. Analysts anticipate potential growth in F-150 Lightning sales throughout 2024, considering the slower sales results in early 2023 due to production pauses and a recall.

Ford Mustang Mach-E sales faced significant challenges in January, with only 1,295 units sold, marking the second-lowest result since its launch in March 2023. The reported “gross stock” decreased slightly to 21,400 units, yet still represents several months of sales. Production figures for the Mach-E in January amounted to 3,454, the lowest since the factory upgrade in January-February 2023.

Ford E-Transit van sales, on the other hand, performed strongly in January with 1,121 units sold, reflecting a positive trend and marking the model as America’s best-selling electric van nameplate in 2023.
