Ford Motor has opened orders for its updated Capri electric SUV, introducing a new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and upgraded drivetrain to improve range and efficiency in the European market.

The Capri, positioned as a sportier counterpart to the Ford Explorer electric SUV, starts at €42,400 in Germany, while UK pricing begins at £37,485. Both models are built on Volkswagen Group’s updated MEB+ platform, reflecting closer technical integration between the two automakers.

In its base configuration, the Capri Standard Range now offers up to 464 kilometres of WLTP range, an increase of more than 17% compared with the previous version. The improvement is driven by a larger 58 kWh battery—up from 52 kWh—and a more efficient electric motor.

Ford has adopted Volkswagen’s APP350 motor, replacing the older APP310 unit. The new motor delivers 140 kW of power and 350 Nm of torque, offering improved efficiency while maintaining a similar permanent-magnet synchronous design.

The transition to LFP battery chemistry marks a shift away from nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) cells. LFP batteries are generally more cost-effective and durable, though historically lower in energy density. Recent advances, particularly in cell-to-pack technology, have helped close this gap, enabling competitive performance in compact electric vehicles.

Ford said the updated Capri also benefits from aerodynamic advantages compared with the Explorer, contributing to its slightly higher range figures.

In addition to drivetrain upgrades, the model receives new features including standard one-pedal driving and the “Pro Power Onboard” system, which allows the vehicle to supply up to 2.3 kW of electricity to external devices.

The Capri shares several updates with other MEB-based vehicles, including the latest versions of adaptive cruise control with traffic light recognition, a reversing assistant, and a driver monitoring system.

Ford has also updated its infotainment system, branded “SYNC Move,” with improved interface customisation and larger display areas for navigation, camera views, and parking assistance.

A new “Capri Collection” trim has also been introduced, featuring exclusive styling elements such as Tribute Blue paint, 21-inch alloy wheels, and additional exterior design accents.

“Capri is our answer to customers asking for a versatile and capable electric family vehicle that stands out from the crowd,” said Christian Weingaertner, General Manager, Passenger Vehicles at Ford Europe. “The Capri Collection celebrates the motorsport heritage and iconic performance car history of Capri, with the advanced technologies and convenience features of the future.”

The updated Capri forms part of Ford’s broader strategy to expand its electric vehicle portfolio in Europe, leveraging shared platforms and technologies to improve efficiency and reduce development costs.
