FedEx said it is adding 17 electric delivery trucks to its fleet in Japan, deploying the vehicles on last-mile routes in major metropolitan areas as part of its global electrification strategy and in support of the country’s climate goals.

The rollout includes two Japanese-made light-duty electric trucks — the Mitsubishi Fuso eCanter and the Isuzu Motors ELF EV — which will be used for regular pickup and delivery operations in Tokyo, Kanagawa and Osaka. Each vehicle offers a payload capacity of about 1.5 tonnes, FedEx said.

FedEx estimates that each electric truck will reduce tailpipe carbon dioxide emissions by around 3.3 metric tonnes per year compared with a diesel equivalent, based on the distances driven on the planned routes. The company said dense urban areas are a priority for electrification, where zero-emission vehicles can deliver the greatest environmental benefits.

“Our business strategy focuses on delivering reliable service to customers, and sustainability and efficiency are integral to how we operate,” said Kei Alan Kubota, managing director of FedEx Japan. “These new EVs will reduce emissions on high-density urban routes while helping us maintain the speed and quality our customers expect.”

The deployment forms part of FedEx’s broader plan to electrify its global pickup and delivery fleet and achieve carbon-neutral operations by 2040. The initiative also aligns with Japan’s national climate targets, which call for greenhouse gas emissions to be cut by 60% by 2035 from 2013 levels and for the country to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

Urban freight transport is seen as a key area for emissions reduction in Japan, particularly as e-commerce growth continues to increase delivery volumes in major cities. FedEx said the new electric trucks demonstrate how zero-tailpipe-emission vehicles can be integrated into daily logistics operations at scale.

Beyond vehicle electrification, FedEx is also expanding the use of digital tools to improve emissions transparency. Its FedEx Sustainability Insights platform provides customers with historical carbon emissions data for eligible shipments, enabling them to assess the environmental impact of their logistics choices and explore ways to reduce emissions.

With the latest additions in Japan, FedEx continues to expand its electric vehicle deployments in last-mile logistics, focusing on markets where regulatory frameworks and urban density support the transition to low-emission delivery solutions.
