Extreme H, the pioneering hydrogen off-road racing championship, has unveiled its inaugural racing machine, the Pioneer 25, set to debut at Extreme E’s Hydro X Prix in Scotland this month.
Following the success of battery-electric vehicles in off-road racing, Extreme E is now pushing the boundaries with hydrogen fuel cell technology under the rebranded Extreme H. The newly revealed Pioneer 25 is a modified version of the Odyssey 21 from Extreme E, featuring a 75 kW hydrogen fuel cell by Symbio and a 36 kWh battery pack from Australian firm Fortescue. The vehicle boasts dual 200 kW electric motors—one at the front and one at the rear—providing a total system power of 400 kW and 450 Nm of system torque.
Accelerating from 0 to 100 kph in just 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 200 kph, the Pioneer 25 showcases robust performance capabilities, supported by double wishbone suspension from American specialist FOX, enabling it to tackle gradients of up to 130%.
Measuring 4.8 meters in length, 1.9 meters in width, and 2.4 meters in height, the single-seater Pioneer 25 features a central driving position and weighs 2,200 kg—305 kg heavier than its predecessor, the Odyssey 21.
All units in the Extreme H series will adhere to a standardized package of parts from Spark Racing Technology, allowing teams flexibility in designing front and rear bodywork and lights to personalize their vehicles.
The inaugural season of Extreme H is scheduled to commence in April 2025, encompassing 10 rounds across five global locations, starting in Saudi Arabia and continuing through the UK, Germany, Italy, and the US.
“We are incredibly proud to introduce the world to the first hydrogen racing car and the Extreme H series,” commented Alejandro Agag, Founder and CEO of Extreme H. “This launch is not just about a new vehicle; it’s about pioneering the future of sustainable motorsport. Hydrogen fuel cells offer a remarkable opportunity to reduce our carbon footprint and promote clean energy solutions, and we are proud to lead this charge with Extreme H.”
