Evolt Charging, a subsidiary of SWARCO Smart Charging, has installed a new series of 22kW electric vehicle (EV) charge points across nine heritage sites managed by Cadw in Wales. The project, backed by funding from Transport for Wales, also includes wall-mounted chargers at four regional depots to support the government agency’s transition to an electric fleet.

The charge points have been installed at locations including Tintern Abbey and Harlech Castle, with the aim of improving EV accessibility in rural areas while encouraging sustainable tourism and operations. Although the total number of units has not been disclosed, Evolt shared a press image showing two columns with four charge points in Tintern.

The initiative is part of Transport for Wales’ broader Sustainable Development Plan to enhance the country’s green transport network. Cadw, which is responsible for conserving Wales’ historic sites, is reportedly the first Welsh Government division to convert its maintenance fleet to electric vehicles, aligning with national Net Zero goals.

“The introduction of reliable and convenient charging infrastructure at nine of Cadw’s historic sites will enable visitors and local residents alike to charge their vehicles, in turn supporting local businesses and communities,” said Jack Sargeant MS, Minister for Culture, Skills and Social Partnership. “Crucially, it will also help to address gaps in public EV infrastructure – particularly in rural areas – giving EV drivers, as well as our maintenance staff, greater confidence that they can travel sustainably across Wales.”

In addition to the public chargers, wallbox charging units were installed at Cadw’s depots in Caernarfon, Caerphilly, Crumlin and Haverfordwest. These depots serve as charging hubs for Cadw’s new fleet of electric cars and vans used by maintenance teams traveling between sites. Staff have also been issued RFID cards for additional top-ups at public Cadw charging points while on duty.

“We’re proud to support Cadw and Transport for Wales in delivering reliable EV charging at some of Wales’ most historic sites,” said Justin Meyer, Managing Director of SWARCO Smart Charging. “This infrastructure will encourage EV adoption and aid Cadw’s fleet transition.”

The installation aims to enhance travel confidence for EV users in less-connected areas, while integrating environmental sustainability into the country’s cultural and tourism sectors.
