SAIC Volkswagen has opened pre-sales for the ID. ERA 8X, a five-seat extended-range electric SUV positioned between the automaker’s growing range of electrified vehicles in China.
The mid- to large-size SUV is offered in four variants: Pro, Max, Max Long Range and Ultra Long Range. While pre-sales prices have not yet been announced, the model is expected to target China’s 250,000-yuan to 350,000-yuan market.
The ID. ERA 8X is scheduled to officially launch on October 12 and combines an 800-volt electrical architecture, an extended-range powertrain and Momenta driver-assistance technology.
SAIC Volkswagen ID. ERA 8X Pre-Sales and Variants
The ID. ERA 8X is available in four configurations:
- Pro
- Max
- Max Long Range
- Ultra Long Range
SAIC Volkswagen has not yet disclosed the pre-sales prices for the four variants.
Customers can reserve the SUV with an 888-yuan deposit, which can be converted into a 5,888-yuan credit toward the final payment. The pre-sale campaign also includes limited delivery gift packages for the first 10,000 customers and priority production and delivery.
The pre-sale benefits are available through October 12, when the ID. ERA 8X is scheduled to officially launch.
Dimensions and Five-Seat Layout
The ID. ERA 8X measures 5,020 mm in length, 1,997 mm in width and 1,750 mm in height.
Its wheelbase measures 2,970 mm.
Compared with the larger six-seat ID. ERA 9X, the 8X is 187 mm shorter and has a wheelbase that is 100 mm shorter, while both models share the same 1,997 mm width.
The ID. ERA 8X uses a five-seat configuration, giving it a different cabin layout from the three-row, six-seat ID. ERA 9X.
Extended-Range Electric Powertrain
The ID. ERA 8X uses an extended-range electric powertrain built around a 1.5-liter turbocharged EA211 engine.
The range extender has a maximum output of 105 kW and works with the SUV’s electric propulsion system.
Both two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations are available, allowing the lineup to cover different performance and traction requirements.
Unlike a conventional hybrid system, the EREV configuration is designed around electric propulsion with the gasoline engine serving as a range extender for longer journeys.
Battery Capacity and Electric Range
The ID. ERA 8X is offered with two battery capacities: 51.1 kWh and 65.2 kWh.
Depending on the configuration, the SUV provides between 340 km and 451 km of CLTC battery-only range.
With a full fuel tank and a fully charged battery, the maximum combined CLTC range reaches 1,602 km.
The long-range variants use the larger battery capacity to provide increased electric-only driving capability.
800-Volt High-Voltage Platform
The ID. ERA 8X is built on an 800-volt high-voltage platform.
The architecture supports the SUV’s battery-electric driving capability and extended-range powertrain, while providing the electrical foundation for high-voltage charging and energy management.
The combination of a relatively large battery and range-extender system allows the ID. ERA 8X to cover daily driving primarily through electric power while retaining extended-distance capability.
Momenta R7 Driver-Assistance System
The ID. ERA 8X uses Momenta’s R7 world model solution for driver assistance.
The system is supported by a 192-channel LiDAR and a total of 26 sensors.
The driver-assistance package supports highway and urban Navigation on Autopilot (NOA), as well as parking-space-to-parking-space navigation.
The combination of LiDAR, multiple sensors and the R7 world model is designed to provide environmental perception and automated driving assistance across a range of road conditions.
VW.OS Digital Cockpit
The cabin runs Volkswagen’s VW.OS operating system and uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P processor for computing.
A 15.6-inch central touchscreen serves as the primary display for infotainment and vehicle functions.
The SUV also features a W-HUD, providing key driving information within the driver’s forward field of view.
The digital cockpit combines Volkswagen’s software platform with a high-performance automotive computing system to support the vehicle’s connected and intelligent functions.
ID. ERA 8X and ID. ERA 9X
The ID. ERA 8X joins the six-seat ID. ERA 9X as part of Volkswagen’s growing extended-range SUV portfolio in China.
The ID. ERA 9X was launched in late April as Volkswagen’s first EREV in the Chinese market. Its limited-time promotional prices ranged from 299,800 yuan to 349,800 yuan, compared with list prices of 309,800 yuan to 359,800 yuan.
Volkswagen said deliveries of the ID. ERA 9X exceeded 10,000 units within two months of launch.
The smaller ID. ERA 8X uses a shorter body and five-seat configuration while retaining the same overall EREV concept.
