The London Borough of Enfield has announced plans to install 1,000 new electric vehicle charging points in partnership with charging operator Char.gy, significantly expanding access to public charging infrastructure for residents.

The rollout will primarily focus on integrating chargers into existing streetlight columns, while additional standalone charging towers will be installed at selected locations across the borough.

Focus on residents without off-street parking

According to Enfield Council, the initiative is designed to provide affordable overnight and long-stay charging options for residents who do not have access to private driveways or dedicated parking spaces.

The majority of the new charging points will be retrofitted directly into lampposts, enabling drivers to charge their vehicles close to home using existing street infrastructure.

The council said the project aims to make electric vehicle ownership more practical and accessible for a larger number of residents.

Lamppost charging network expands

While the specific charging hardware has not yet been confirmed, Char.gy has previously deployed its Flow range of lamppost chargers across several UK locations.

The compact units can typically be installed within existing streetlight columns in a matter of hours and feature Type 2 charging connectors.

According to Char.gy’s published specifications, the chargers are available in both 5kW and 7kW variants and support multiple payment options, including contactless payments and mobile app transactions. The units are also compatible with ISO 15118 Plug & Charge functionality.

New standalone charging towers planned

Alongside the lamppost charging programme, Enfield Council will replace older EV charging equipment with new standalone charging towers at five locations across the borough.

The council has not yet disclosed the exact locations or specifications of the new charging hubs.

Residents invited to help shape rollout

Enfield residents are being encouraged to submit suggestions for future charger locations through a dedicated request process.

The council said all proposed locations will be assessed based on a range of criteria, including technical feasibility, accessibility and local demand.

The consultation process is intended to help ensure that charging infrastructure is deployed where it can provide the greatest benefit to local communities.

Supporting EV adoption

Councillor Maria Alexandrou, Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said expanding charging infrastructure is a key priority for the borough.

“One of my priorities is to speed up opportunities for electric vehicle charging in Enfield and finally, we have a significant offer for drivers.”

“We know that access to convenient, affordable charging is key to helping residents make the switch to electric vehicles. By expanding our on-street charging network, we’re making EV ownership a realistic option for far more people.”

Advancing local sustainability goals

The project forms part of Enfield’s wider efforts to support cleaner transportation and reduce emissions across the borough.

“This is a major step forward in our ambition to support a more sustainable transport system in Enfield,” Alexandrou added.

With 1,000 additional charging points planned, the scheme represents one of the largest local authority-led on-street charging expansions in London, helping address one of the key barriers to EV adoption among urban residents without access to home charging facilities.
