Tesla CEO Elon Musk has provided an update on the anticipated release of Full Self Driving (FSD) V12.4.2, highlighting ongoing efforts to refine the system for smoother operation.
In recent communications on social media platform X, Musk acknowledged that Tesla is continuing to work on the release of FSD V12.4.2 to address concerns about driving smoothness, despite achieving fewer interventions in the system’s performance.
“Sorry for the delay. This release had far fewer interventions, but suffered in driving smoothness. Part of the issue was too much training on interventions and not enough on normal driving,” Musk explained, drawing an analogy to medical training emphasizing emergency room cases over preventative care.

Musk also hinted at future advancements, noting Tesla’s next-generation AI model following this update shows promise with a significant increase in parameter count, a challenging feat without upgrading the vehicle’s inference computer.
Tesla enthusiasts had anticipated the release of FSD V12.4 to a wider fleet following initial rollout to select employees in late May, with subsequent versions like V12.4.1 reaching a limited number of users in early June. Reports now indicate that FSD V12.4.2 is gradually being deployed to Tesla employees.
The development of Tesla’s FSD technology holds strategic importance for the company’s long-term plans, particularly in relation to its forthcoming Robotaxi initiative expected to be unveiled on August 8, 2024.
