Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, recently disclosed that the company had software-locked the range of its cheapest Model Y, the Standard Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant, and intends to offer an upgrade that could add 40 to 60 more miles of range for $1,500 to $2,000.
Tesla has a history of periodically offering vehicles with shorter ranges at lower prices. Rather than manufacturing new vehicles with smaller battery packs, the company opted to utilize the same battery packs capable of higher ranges and software-lock the excess range.
The revelation came after Tesla ceased taking orders for the Standard Range RWD Model Y, which had a 260-mile range, and introduced a new Long Range RWD variant with a 320-mile range.
In a statement, Elon Musk confirmed suspicions that the previous Standard Range RWD Model Y was software-locked:
“The ‘260 mile’ range Model Y’s built over the past several months actually have more range that can be unlocked for $1500 to $2000 (gains 40 to 60 miles of range), depending on which battery cells you have.”
The standard Tesla Model Y now has a 320 mile range!

Musk added that Tesla is currently in the process of seeking regulatory approvals for this upgrade offer.
Previously, Tesla owners could unlock extra range simply by using their mobile apps. However, with this new development, owners of the Standard Range RWD Model Y may soon have the opportunity to unlock additional range through a software update for a fee.
