In an update outlining Tesla’s upcoming Full Self-Driving (FSD) software updates, CEO Elon Musk has stirred excitement among enthusiasts. The upcoming FSD v12, alongside the impending launch of Tesla’s dedicated Robotaxi, has generated considerable buzz around Tesla’s self-driving endeavors.
Musk, no stranger to predicting the imminent release of a true self-driving system, acknowledges that while Tesla is nearing this goal, the path ahead remains challenging.
Addressing the release schedule for FSD, Musk revealed, “12.4 has almost completely retrained models. The final touches are for comfort, as it sometimes accelerates or brakes too fast for most people’s taste.” This update marks a significant advancement from the current version 12.3.6, with Tesla reportedly having completely retrained the models for improved performance.
Musk recently announced that Tesla’s training compute power is no longer a constraint, following an increase in capacity. This development has provided the FSD team with more opportunities to retrain neural nets using cleaner data, further enhancing the system’s capabilities.
Looking beyond 12.4, Musk shared insights into versions 12.5 and 12.6, which are currently in various stages of testing. He highlighted the team’s focus on handling rare, complex scenarios, such as navigating narrow, one-way roads and encountering road closures that necessitate reversing to find an alternative route. Musk stressed the importance of fleet-wide communication to prevent multiple Teslas from getting stuck in such situations.
While specific timelines for these updates were not provided, Musk hinted that v12.4 could be rolled out to the Tesla fleet as soon as next week. This news has left Tesla enthusiasts eagerly anticipating the advancements in their vehicles’ self-driving capabilities.
