Electrify America said on Thursday it has received the Electric Innovation Scalable Catalyst Award from the Electric Innovation Initiative, in recognition of its deployment of battery energy storage systems (BESS) across its U.S. charging network.
The company has installed more than 170 BESS units with a combined storage capacity exceeding 65,000 kilowatt-hours. The technology enables Hyper-Fast charging in areas with limited utility capacity, including rural and underserved communities, by storing power during low-demand periods and discharging it during peak times. This approach reduces the need for costly grid upgrades and supports broader EV adoption.
“Battery energy storage is unlocking a new chapter for EV charging,” said Rob Barrosa, President and CEO of Electrify America. “By overcoming electrical grid constraints, we can deliver Hyper-Fast charging in more places and serve more drivers.”
As part of the award, Electrify America received a $10,000 prize, which it will donate to the Edtunity Institute, a minority-owned and veteran-led nonprofit in Virginia focused on workforce development and vocational training for transitioning military members and underserved populations.
