Electrify America, the largest open DC fast charging network in the United States, has opened its first electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Hawaii. The station, located in Pearl City on the island of Oahu, features four EV chargers capable of delivering up to 150kW.
With the launch of this new station, Electrify America now has a network presence in 47 states plus the District of Columbia. Although it has not yet expanded to Vermont, the company is well on its way to achieving its goal of installing over 10,000 individual chargers at more than 1,800 total charging stations in the US and Canada by 2026.
Hawaii is already a leader in EV adoption, ranking highest among states in terms of the percentage of electric vehicles on its roads. The state’s Department of Energy reported that as of 2022, Hawaii had 406 EV charging stations and 940 charging outlets, the majority of which are Level 2. However, with the state’s recent announcement of its EV infrastructure plan following the passage of the Biden administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, gaps in the charging network will be filled, making EV ownership more cost-effective and convenient.
The new Electrify America station in Hawaii is a significant step forward in supporting Hawaii’s aggressive state goals for the adoption of EVs. In February 2023, the state saw a 26% increase in the number of passenger EVs compared to the same month the previous year, with a total of 23,450 EVs registered. This increase reflects the state’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving a cleaner transportation system.
Drivers in Hawaii can pay for charging at Electrify America’s stations by credit or debit card, or by using the Electrify America mobile app. With the company’s chargers offering speeds of up to 150kW or 350kW, EV owners can quickly and conveniently recharge their vehicles, supporting Hawaii’s transition to a cleaner and more sustainable transportation system.
