Slovenian drive technology specialist Elaphe has unveiled its new high-performance wheel motor platform, Sonic X, which delivers up to 300 kW of power per wheel while adding just 25 kilograms of unsprung weight. The company claims the platform marks a significant advancement in in-wheel propulsion systems by offering a 40% weight reduction compared to dual-motor electric axles.

Unlike Elaphe’s previous Sonic 1 platform, introduced at CES 2025 and designed exclusively for battery-electric vehicles, the new Sonic X is system-agnostic. It supports both 400V and 800V electric systems and can even be integrated into vehicles with internal combustion engines as a performance-enhancing solution. “Sonic X is designed to support hybrid and electric vehicle architectures, delivering massive performance upgrades for new and existing vehicles,” the company said.

Key highlights of the Sonic X include its scalability and compatibility with standard high-performance braking systems. The motor can be paired with brake discs that fit 20- to 23-inch rims—an industry-first, according to Elaphe. The platform supports axle peak power outputs of up to 1 MW and peak torque of 9,000 Nm per axle in rear-wheel-drive configurations.

The system is composed of direct-drive in-wheel motors without transmissions, integrated power electronics, and Elaphe’s proprietary high-speed control software. It boasts a continuous power density of over 8 kW/kg and torque density of 80 Nm/kg. Elaphe says its advanced slip control improves acceleration and deceleration by 15% and allows for 5% faster cornering speeds. The braking system, designed for track conditions, is said to lower brake temperatures and reduce stopping distances.

“This is more than just a powertrain—we’re redefining the vehicle dynamics landscape,” Elaphe said in its announcement. The company also emphasized the Sonic X’s potential in high-performance applications, citing its ongoing development partnership with McLaren and earlier collaborations with firms like Aptera and Lordstown Motors.

Elaphe’s Sonic X platform reflects the industry’s growing interest in modular and lightweight propulsion technologies capable of supporting next-generation mobility solutions, from high-performance sports cars to electric trucks and hybrids.
