Ekoenergetyka, a Polish charging infrastructure manufacturer, and BP Pulse have announced a new partnership aimed at providing charging solutions for electric trucks, with a particular focus on overnight charging. The collaboration targets fleet operators, addressing the growing demand for scalable infrastructure for heavy goods transport. The focus will be on both depot-based charging and public charging along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
This partnership comes in response to the EU’s stringent CO2 reduction targets for trucks, which mandate a 45% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030 and 65% by 2035. From 2035, these targets will also apply to professional vehicles such as refuse collection and construction vehicles. The EU has also set deadlines for the development of charging infrastructure for heavy-duty vehicles along the TEN-T network by 2025, 2027, and 2030, further emphasizing the need for expanded infrastructure.
Ekoenergetyka and BP Pulse’s cooperation aims to ensure the smooth operation of fleet operations by addressing these infrastructure challenges. Ekoenergetyka outlined three primary charging scenarios for battery-electric trucks: charging during loading and unloading, charging during legal rest periods on highways, and overnight charging at depots or public locations such as service stations and rest areas. The companies are working to develop solutions for these scenarios, particularly the need for public charging along the TEN-T network.
Although the exact roles of the companies remain unclear, it is expected that Ekoenergetyka will provide the hardware, while BP Pulse, with its expertise in fleet operations, will manage the infrastructure and offer advisory services. The partnership aims to address existing gaps in charging availability, especially in public areas, to support the transition to electric heavy-duty transport.
Maciej Wojeński, co-founder and member of the Supervisory Board of Ekoenergetyka-Polska, stated, “Organizing overnight charging for large e-truck fleets, especially in public parking areas along the TEN-T network, is a significant challenge for the electrification of heavy-duty transport.” Nigel Head, European EV Truck Director at BP Pulse, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in meeting the needs of fleet operators transitioning to electric vehicles across Europe.
