In a significant stride towards reshaping the energy landscape, E.On, the energy provider, has initiated a pioneering pilot project in Copenhagen. Marking a departure from conventional pricing norms, the endeavour introduces dynamic pricing for electric vehicle (EV) charging, promising to revolutionise the public charging infrastructure.
Dr Lioudmila Simon, the Head of Mobility Innovation at E.On, unveiled the ambitious project with enthusiasm, underlining its potential to usher in a transformative era of energy pricing and sales strategies.
The landmark rollout in Denmark signifies E.On’s maiden venture into flexible pricing strategies for public charging stations. The core principle of the pricing model rests on an adaptive structure, taking into account variables such as the time of day, grid capacity, and the proportion of renewable energy in the energy mix. E.On asserts that opting for charging during off-peak hours could confer users substantial discounts, potentially reducing costs by up to 50% compared to standard rates.

Anders Krag, the Managing Director for E.ON Drive Infrastructure in Denmark, voiced his anticipation for the project’s outcomes. He affirms that dynamic pricing holds the promise of optimising EV charging across public charging stations, creating a symbiotic relationship between customers and the environment. As an early adopter of this approach within the European charging landscape, E.On eagerly awaits the empirical results of this innovative pilot.
However, the company has not disclosed the projected duration of the pilot phase, nor has it divulged any plans for extending the dynamic pricing model to other markets.
In Copenhagen, E.On emerged triumphant as one of the three winners of a competitive tender aimed at establishing public charging infrastructure. The selection criteria, encompassing user-centric charging prices, construction timelines, sustainability benchmarks, and financial considerations, culminated in the awarding of contracts in March 2023. E.On secured four sub-contracts, encompassing 165 charging stations, while the remaining contracts were allocated to Clever and OK.
E.On’s global influence extends to more than 36,000 public charging points and 3,000 ultra-rapid charging stations, all conveniently accessible through the company’s dedicated app. The strategic vision for the near future envisions the company amassing 5,000 high-power charge points by 2026, coupled with an expansion of existing infrastructure and the establishment of new charging hubs. E.On relies prominently on Alpitronic for its fast-charging equipment, with a recent order supplementing their efforts in May of this year. This strategic alignment showcases E.On’s commitment to advancing EV charging technology.
