Stellantis’ premium subsidiary DS Automobiles is contemplating the launch of a radically designed electric sedan, potentially succeeding the DS 9 as the flagship model. The new sedan aims to feature unique styling and high aerodynamic efficiency, CEO Olivier François told Auto Express.
In a move to further distinguish itself from Citroën, DS Automobiles is exploring the introduction of an electric sedan with retro styling inspired by the iconic Citroën DS. This vehicle is expected to debut later this decade and could position itself as the brand’s new flagship model, replacing the China-produced DS 9 executive sedan.
DS Automobiles, along with Alfa Romeo and Lancia, is under pressure to establish a stronger foothold in the premium car market. Forbes reported in 2021 that these brands have a 10-year window to prove their viability. As part of its all-electric strategy, DS plans to develop an aero-focused car that pays homage to the Citroën DS.
“The DSs of the 1960s and 1970s were iconic because of their extremely aerodynamic design,” François said. “We can create the world’s most meaningful aero-designed electric car by taking that approach again.”
François emphasized the importance of achieving a confidence-inspiring driving range in electric vehicles, which is why automakers are focusing on aerodynamics. This renewed emphasis is bringing low-floored family cars like sedans back into the spotlight.
The Citroën DS, with its fast-sloping roofline, tapered tail, and partly covered rear wheels, was revolutionary in its time. These features could inspire the design of a modern electric executive sedan. François indicated that the potential flagship electric sedan would need to be “large, expensive, and amazing,” likely built on Stellantis’ electric-first STLA Large platform, designed for D and E segment cars.
Stellantis has announced that the STLA Large platform-based EVs will feature 400- or 800-volt battery packs with an energy storage capacity of 85-118 kWh. Models with an 800-volt battery pack will support charging rates of up to 4.5 kWh per minute. Stellantis is targeting a range of up to 800 km for sedans on this platform, but François suggested that the flagship DS electric sedan might achieve a range of over 700 km due to its larger size and premium features.
Eight STLA Large platform-based models are expected to arrive globally between 2024 and 2026. The anticipated DS flagship electric sedan may debut as a concept in 2025, coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the Citroën DS, and will serve as a feedback tool for designers and engineers before final production.
