DHL has teamed up with autonomous software company Oxa to successfully deploy a self-driving vehicle in live airport traffic at London Heathrow. The project, which completed over 800 miles of fully autonomous driving in just 14 days, marks a significant step in integrating autonomous vehicles into airport operations.
As part of its long-standing Strategic Partnership with Heathrow, which began in 2020, DHL has been at the forefront of decarbonization efforts and innovation in the logistics sector. The collaboration with Oxa aims to optimize airside operations and enhance efficiency in the inter-terminal baggage transfer service using autonomous technology.
Gavin Jackson, CEO of Oxa, highlighted the potential of autonomous vehicles in modernizing airport supply chains: āThere are huge opportunities to modernize airport supply chains with intelligent, self-driving vehicles that improve the entire customer experience. We are delighted to partner with DHL in order to support the use of autonomous vehicles within airside operations at Heathrow and around the world ā working towards fully automated (airport) logistics at scale.ā
This initial proof-of-concept trial utilized an automated Ford sedan, with plans to scale the project using more suitable vehicle platforms for baggage handling, such as the Ford E-Transit electric van and electrified ground handling equipment.
Nigel Milton, Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer at Heathrow, emphasized the long-term vision for the airport: āOur vision is to be an extraordinary airport fit for the future. Having experienced this innovative and sustainable project first hand, Iām confident collaborations like this with our strategic partner DHL, and their partner Oxa, will help us realize our ambition. The future of airport operations requires advancements which will enhance efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and support increased capacity. This project is an exciting proof point of the progress that will make every journey at Heathrow better.ā
