Denza, the joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and BYD, has revealed the Z9 GT, a new electric model set to make waves in the EV market. The Z9 GT is a shooting brake-style saloon, measuring 5.18 meters long, 1.99 meters wide, and 1.50 or 1.48 meters high, depending on the version. Equipped with optional air suspension, the height is reduced by 20 millimeters compared to the standard chassis. The wheelbase is 3.125 meters, as indicated in Chinese documents.
With its design resembling the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo, especially in the side view, the Z9 GT is not just about looks—it boasts impressive performance. Featuring three electric motors (one at the front and two at the rear), the Z9 GT delivers a total output of 710 kW. The front axle motor produces 230 kW, while each of the rear axle motors delivers 240 kW.
The electric vehicle is powered by a battery from FinDreams Battery, BYD’s battery division, although specific details about the battery technology have not been disclosed. Given the Z9 GT’s long wheelbase, high performance, and hefty weight of 2,875 kilograms, it’s likely that the battery will be generously sized, possibly using BYD’s own LFP technology.
The Z9 GT’s inclusion in the vehicle catalogue of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) indicates an imminent market launch. This catalogue lists vehicles with standardized data to provide consumers with neutral information for comparisons. The public has until April 22 to provide feedback, suggesting that the official market launch, possibly at the Beijing Motor Show at the end of April, could be followed by deliveries starting at the end of the year.
Denza, founded in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Daimler AG, has recently seen BYD increase its stake to 90%, giving it decision-making power. With a reorganized portfolio, BYD now offers three models under the Denza brand—two SUVs named N7 and N8, as well as the large D9 van.
