Daimler Buses has unveiled the Mercedes-Benz eIntouro, a near-series prototype of its first battery-electric intercity bus. The eIntouro is expected to enter series production in late 2025, with deliveries commencing in 2026.
The new model represents a strategic step to electrify interurban transport, offering a range of up to 500 kilometers powered by a shared technology platform from Daimler Truck’s electric portfolio.
The eIntouro features two battery pack configurations, with a combined capacity of 414 kWh. Utilizing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, the bus offers improved longevity and efficient energy usage.
Charging capabilities include a CCS Type 2 connector supporting up to 300 kW, enabling a full recharge in approximately 90 minutes. Customers can select charging socket placements for added flexibility.
The drivetrain includes a Cetrax central electric motor paired with a three-speed automatic gearbox and a Daimler-built RO 440 drive axle, offering high compatibility with the diesel Intouro model to ensure cost efficiency.
The bus will debut in two lengths, 12.2 and 13.1 meters, accommodating 50 to 63 passengers with various seating configurations. Optional features include a toilet for the longer version, wheelchair lifts, and advanced safety systems such as Attention Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, and a 360° camera system.
A modular interior design allows for customization to suit interurban or excursion uses, with comfort-oriented cockpits and state-of-the-art electronics supporting over-the-air updates to enhance operational efficiency.
“With the eIntouro, we aim to revolutionize intercity transport by combining long-distance capability and sustainability,” said CEO Till Oberwörder. “However, the success of this transition also hinges on the availability of adequate charging infrastructure.”
Order books for the eIntouro will open in early 2025, with its series debut set for Busworld in Brussels later that year. Daimler Buses anticipates the model to set a benchmark in electrified intercity travel.
