Italian public transport operator CTM Cagliari has placed 47 Iveco E-Way electric midi buses into service, completing the city’s largest-ever fleet renewal programme under Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP).

The new battery-electric buses are now operating on some of Cagliari’s busiest urban routes as part of the city’s strategy to transition to a fully zero-emission public transport fleet by 2030.

Electric Midi Buses Enter Service

The newly delivered Iveco E-Way buses measure 10.7 metres in length and 2.33 metres in width, making them well suited for operating through Cagliari’s narrow city streets and densely populated urban areas.

The vehicles have been deployed on routes 8, 20, 30R, and 1Q, which serve heavily travelled sections of the Sardinian capital.

According to city authorities, each bus is equipped with 350 kWh NMC battery packs, providing an operational driving range of up to 350 kilometres on a single charge.

Fleet Renewal Completed

The arrival of the 47 buses marks the completion of CTM Cagliari’s procurement programme funded through Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

The overall investment totals approximately €92 million, with funding allocated to modernize the city’s public transport system and accelerate its transition toward zero-emission mobility.

Following the latest deliveries, 70% of CTM Cagliari’s bus fleet is now electric, putting the operator on track to achieve a fully zero-emission fleet by 2030, ahead of European Union targets.

Expanding Sustainable Public Transport

CTM Cagliari now operates a total of 236 battery-electric buses, making it one of Italy’s leading public transport operators in fleet electrification.

The latest additions build on previous investments, including the procurement of 98 electric buses from Solaris, announced several years ago.

Looking ahead, Cagliari and CTM plan to further improve public transport services by increasing route coverage, extending travel distances, and improving connections with municipalities across the wider Sardinia region as part of future public transport reforms.

The expansion is expected to strengthen regional mobility while supporting the city’s long-term environmental and decarbonization objectives.
