In a captivating blend of nostalgia and innovation, a classic 1995 Mini has been reimagined for the electric era, staying true to its iconic heritage while embracing the call for sustainable driving. Collaborating in this groundbreaking endeavor, Mini Australia and Fellten Australia have breathed new life into the vintage hatchback by bestowing it with an all-electric powertrain, ushering in a wave of conversations about the intersection of history and eco-consciousness.
The heart of the project was the meticulous removal of the original engine and transmission, clearing the canvas for Fellten Australia’s ingenious engineering. An impressive feat soon followed: the integration of a new BMH front subframe to accommodate the electric powertrain. Astoundingly, the end result maintained the vehicle’s original weight and impeccable weight distribution, a testament to the expertise that guided this remarkable conversion.

At its core, this electrified classic Mini boasts a modest 19 kWh battery pack, propelling a diminutive yet spirited single electric motor. Delivering 72 kW (100 hp) of power and 175 Nm (129 lb-ft) of torque, the converted Mini accelerates gracefully to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a respectable 8 seconds. With a range of up to 175 km (110 miles) on a single charge, it harmoniously blends its vintage charm with modern-day efficiency.
Equipped with a 6.6 kW onboard charger and a Type 2 charging port, the vehicle stands poised to adapt to the evolving landscape of electric infrastructure. Noteworthy enhancements by Fellten Australia include a regenerative braking system that offers both City and Sport modes, enhancing the driving experience and energy recapture. The incorporation of a fly-by-wire throttle, a PTC cabin heater, and a sophisticated liquid cooling system further underline the meticulous attention to detail.
What sets this project apart is its commitment to authenticity. All the bespoke components seamlessly integrate into the classic Mini’s framework without necessitating any alterations to its chassisāan approach that both celebrates the past and embraces the future.
Dave Budge, Chief Product Officer at Fellten Australia, eloquently summarized the significance of this endeavor, stating, “Never has the topic of electromobility been so relevant, particularly in Australia where EV adoption rates are still in its infancy and there is an opportunity to shape the mindset toward considering sustainable transport. We are excited to be working with MINI Australia on converting this classic collectible, which takes something we all know and love and transforms it into a catalyst for conversations surrounding sustainable mobility solutions.”
