Chinese autonomous driving startup Momenta has begun testing its first in-house chip designed for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), with the processor intended to compete with established rivals such as NVIDIA’s DRIVE Orin-X, local media outlet 36Kr reported.
Primarily known for its software in assisted and autonomous driving, Momenta started developing its own custom silicon in 2023, recruiting key personnel from the chip division of Chinese smartphone maker Oppo. The move signals the company’s shift toward a full-stack solution, combining both software and hardware capabilities for automakers.
In parallel, Momenta is accelerating its international presence. Sources familiar with the matter said the company’s autonomous test vehicles will soon be deployed in Munich through a collaboration with Uber to launch robotaxi services.
The startup, which counts General Motors and Mercedes-Benz among its backers, is also providing advanced driving assistance functions for overseas models of Chinese automaker SAIC. These vehicles are expected to go on sale in markets including the UK, Germany, and Australia.
