China has introduced a new set of technical regulations for extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), establishing stricter performance requirements and testing procedures as the segment continues to grow rapidly in the world’s largest electric vehicle market.

The revised industry standard, QC/T 1086-2026, will take effect in November 2026 and replace the previous QC/T 1086-2017 standard that has been in place since 2017.

The updated framework reflects the increasing importance of EREVs in China and introduces more detailed and measurable requirements for range-extender systems used in electric vehicles.

Shift Toward More Binding Technical Requirements

One of the most notable changes is the transition from broad technical guidelines to a more structured system of mandatory requirements and testing procedures.

While the previous standard was described as “Technical Conditions,” the new version is titled “Technical Requirements and Testing Procedures,” signaling a more rigorous regulatory approach.

According to reports from CarNewsChina and CNR, many qualitative descriptions have been replaced with quantifiable performance targets and verification methods.

For example, generator power control accuracy is now subject to specific limits. Systems with a rated output of up to 50 kW may deviate by no more than ±1.5 kW, while systems above 50 kW are limited to a maximum deviation of ±3%.

Enhanced Testing and Reliability Standards

The revised regulations introduce new durability testing requirements intended to simulate long-term real-world vehicle operation.

Manufacturers will be required to conduct a 750-hour durability test under varying load conditions, as well as a start-stop endurance test involving 100,000 operating cycles.

The testing regime is designed to replicate approximately 300,000 kilometers of vehicle usage, including urban driving conditions where the range-extender engine frequently switches on and off.

Authorities hope the stricter requirements will improve reliability and help eliminate lower-performing technologies from the market.

Greater Focus on Noise, Vibration and Electromagnetic Compatibility

The updated standard also expands requirements covering electromagnetic compatibility, noise levels, and vibration performance.

These areas have become increasingly important as automakers seek to improve the driving experience of range-extended electric vehicles.

The regulations require closer monitoring of the interaction between generators, power electronics, and electric drive systems to ensure stable and interference-free operation.

Noise and vibration generated by the internal combustion engine used as a range extender will also be assessed using more standardized evaluation methods.

Coverage Expanded to New Drive Architectures

The scope of the standard has been broadened to include newer integrated powertrain designs.

In particular, the regulations now cover systems that combine generator and drive functions within a shared transmission unit, reflecting the growing adoption of more compact and integrated EREV architectures.

This expansion ensures that the standard remains relevant as manufacturers continue to develop new approaches to electrified powertrains.

Growing Importance of EREVs in China

The regulatory update comes as demand for range-extended electric vehicles continues to accelerate across China.

Industry reports indicate that the EREV market has recorded strong growth every year since 2020. More than one million EREVs were sold in China in 2024, while sales are expected to exceed 1.2 million units in 2025.

Several Chinese automakers have expanded their offerings in the segment, including HIMA, IM Motors, Zeekr, Seres, Deepal, Li Auto and Leapmotor.

The new regulations are intended to support the next stage of market development by establishing higher technical standards and ensuring consistent performance as EREVs become an increasingly important part of China’s electrification strategy.
