ChargePoint Unveils ‘Omni Port’ Charging Solution for North America

ChargePoint has introduced its new ‘Omni Port’ charging solution, designed to simplify the charging process for electric vehicle (EV) drivers in North America. The core feature of this innovation is an integrated adapter within the charging station, allowing North American Charging Standard (NACS) vehicles to use Combined Charging System (CCS) stations, ensuring the correct plug is always available.

Unlike separate adapters typically used by consumers, the ‘Omni Port’ is built directly into the charging station. The system operates seamlessly: when a user starts the charging process via the ChargePoint app or the NFC sensor on the station with a smartphone, the charging station automatically releases the appropriate plug. For CCS1 vehicles, the integrated adapter stays within the station, releasing the CCS1 cable. For NACS vehicles, the adapter is released and can be pulled out along with the charging cable. For those not using the ChargePoint app, the appropriate plug can be manually selected on the station’s touchscreen.

This integrated solution eliminates the need for EV drivers to carry their own adapters, though this convenience currently applies only to new ChargePoint stations equipped with the ‘Omni Port.’ While ChargePoint and other operators are working to add NACS connections to existing CCS stations, a separate adapter will still be necessary during the transition period if this upgrade has not been completed.

ChargePoint is also focusing on corporate customers with the ‘Omni Port,’ targeting businesses that install charging infrastructure at their sites. This solution allows fleet operators to manage their charging needs without worrying about compatibility with different vehicle charging standards. The ‘Omni Port’ is touted as a more cost-effective option compared to additional charging cables and offers flexibility in parking arrangements, eliminating the need to reserve spaces for specific plug types.

The ‘Omni Port’ will be integrated into select ChargePoint AC and DC charging stations at no additional cost, making it an attractive option for new installations. These upgraded chargers are expected to be delivered by the end of the year, with the possibility of retrofitting the ‘Omni Port’ to existing ChargePoint models CP6000 and Express Plus Power Link 2000 at a nominal cost.

“Across hardware and software, ChargePoint is bringing to market innovative solutions that ensure all drivers who need to charge are able to do so,” said Rick Wilmer, CEO of ChargePoint. “With Omni Port, ChargePoint solved the challenges associated with a multiple connector environment, ensuring Tesla and non-Tesla drivers can continue to expect a world-class driver experience. We are giving drivers and site hosts assurance that ChargePoint will continue to meet all their charging needs now and in the future.”
