Deepal, the new energy vehicle (NEV) unit of Changan Automobile (SHE: 000625), has launched the S09, a six-seater extended-range electric SUV positioned to compete in China’s fast-growing large SUV segment. The new model debuted on May 22 and has already received more than 21,000 confirmed orders, according to the company.
Available only in extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants, the Deepal S09 is priced between RMB 239,900 and RMB 309,900 ($33,310–$43,000). A limited-time RMB 35,000 discount further reduces the entry-level price to RMB 204,900, significantly undercutting rivals such as Li Auto’s Li L9, which starts at RMB 409,800. Deliveries began immediately following the launch event.
“The S09 offers exceptional value and performance in the large SUV category, and we’ve seen enthusiastic customer response already,” Deepal stated in a post on its official Weibo account shortly after the event.
The S09 measures 5,205 mm in length with a 3,105 mm wheelbase and is equipped with a 1.5-liter engine used as a range-extender. It features both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive options. The rear-wheel drive version delivers 231 kW of power and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, while the four-wheel drive version adds a 131 kW front motor, reaching 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds.
All variants come equipped with a 40.18-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery from CATL, offering a CLTC-rated pure electric range of up to 220 km. Advanced driver assistance systems from Huawei are integrated, including ADS SE and ADS Max, with plans to upgrade the higher-end models to Huawei’s ADS 4 system in the second half of 2025.
Deepal, which launched its first model in 2022, also sells the SL03 sedan, S05, S07, L07, and G318 SUVs. The company delivered 20,138 vehicles in April, marking a 58% increase year-on-year, though down 17.4% from March. Total deliveries for the first four months of 2025 reached 87,822 units, up 66% year-on-year.
Deepal has set a 2025 global sales target of 500,000 vehicles, including 100,000 from overseas markets.
