The Canadian government is investing nearly $15 million for the installation of over 2,350 electric vehicle (EV) chargers across the country, with 2,100 of these chargers located in the Greater Toronto Area. The funding was granted to 32 organizations, including private firms, municipalities, and utilities.
The government has made a historic $1 billion investment since 2016 to make EVs more affordable and chargers more accessible to Canadians, and has approved funding for the installation of more than 34,500 EV chargers to date.
Budget 2022 set aside additional funds, totaling $900 million, to continue deploying zero-emission vehicle infrastructure and extend the government’s purchase incentive program until 2025. This program now includes more types of vehicles such as trucks, SUVs, and vans. The budget also allocated nearly $4 billion over eight years for the development of critical minerals resources and value chains, including metals for clean technologies like EVs and advanced batteries.

The 2022 Fall Economic Statement included a tax credit for clean technology and support for clean energy generation and storage, as well as the creation of a Sustainable Jobs Training Centre and Secretariat to provide skills training and job placement for workers in the low-carbon economy.
These investments are aimed at achieving Canada’s goal of having all new passenger vehicles sold in the country be zero-emission by 2035 and advancing the transition to a low-carbon economy.
“We’re making electric vehicles more affordable and charging more accessible where Canadians live, work and play. Investing in more EV chargers, like the ones announced today across the Greater Toronto Area, will put more Canadians in the driver’s seat on the road to a net-zero future and help achieve our climate goals.” said The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources
