BYD has filed for regulatory approval of its Xia multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) following the commencement of pre-orders in late September. The model has been included in the latest catalog released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), allowing for public comments from October 16 to 22. This catalog entry represents the final major regulatory step before the vehicle can be sold in China.

The BYD Xia MPV features two variants, designated as BYD6510MT6HEV1 and BYD6510MT6HEV, both classified as plug-in hybrids. According to the filing, the vehicle measures 5,145 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, and 1,805 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,045 mm. In comparison, the Denza D9 has dimensions of 5,250 mm in length, 1,960 mm in width, and 1,920 mm in height, alongside a wheelbase of 3,110 mm.

The two versions of the Xia MPV weigh 2,470 kg and 2,650 kg, with a top speed of 190 kilometers per hour. Both variants are equipped with lithium iron phosphate batteries sourced from BYD’s battery manufacturing unit, FinDreams Battery. The Xia is powered by a 1,498 ml engine generating a maximum power of 115 kW, complemented by an electric motor that offers up to 200 kW of power.

BYD showcased the Xia for the first time at the Chengdu auto show on August 30, indicating that the MPV would be priced in the RMB 300,000 ($42,140) range and is expected to launch later this year. This model is part of BYD’s Dynasty series, which is named after historical Chinese dynasties, with the Xia representing the first dynasty recorded in Chinese history.

The Xia will utilize BYD’s fifth-generation DM hybrid technology, which was unveiled on May 28 and is designed to reduce fuel consumption. Despite the initiation of pre-orders on September 27, no further pricing details have been disclosed.
