BYD, a Chinese automaker known for its electric vehicles, has introduced its latest model, the Seagull, as part of its Ocean series. The car, which was launched on the first day of the Shanghai Auto Show on April 18, is available for pre-sale in three versions, with prices starting at RMB 78,800 ($11,460).

The Seagull is an A0-class electric vehicle powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power of 55 kW and peak torque of 135 Nm, with an acceleration of 0-50 km/h in 4.9 seconds. The car is available in two range versions, with the lower-priced models offering a range of 305 km and the highest-priced version providing a range of 405 km.

The Seagull uses BYD’s blade batteries with pack capacities of 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh, respectively. The car supports fast charging, taking only 30 minutes to charge from 30 percent to 80 percent. While previous rumors suggested the model would have a version with sodium-ion batteries, this does not appear to be the case.

Compared to other popular mini electric vehicles in the Chinese market, such as the SAIC-GM-Wuling Binguo and Hongguang Mini EV, the Seagull has a length, width, and height of 3,780 mm, 1,715 mm, and 1,540 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,500 mm. The starting price of the Binguo is RMB 59,800, while the Hongguang Mini EV starts at RMB 32,800.

BYD has a reputation for lowering its final prices compared to its pre-sale prices, making the Seagull more affordable than its initial prices suggest. As a result, the Seagull may become a viable option for many families looking for a car for short trips.
