BYD, the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) maker, announced that it will introduce two new sedan models in its Seal lineup on August 8. The new models, the 2025 Seal EV and the Seal 07 DM-i, mark the company’s continued rapid pace of product launches.

The original BYD Seal debuted in China on July 29, 2022, as a battery electric vehicle (BEV) and was considered a strong competitor to the Tesla Model 3. On September 6, 2023, BYD expanded the Seal lineup with the hybrid Seal DM-i. This year, on May 28, the company added the Seal 06 DM-i, featuring the latest DM 5.0 technology.

The upcoming 2025 Seal EV update follows the previous update on March 25, highlighting BYD’s swift product update cycle. The Seal EV Glory Edition, launched on March 25, started at RMB 179,800 ($25,140), a 5.27 percent decrease from its predecessor’s price.

Initially, BYD planned to rename the 2025 Seal EV to the Seal 07 EV but decided to retain the original name following feedback from its user community.

“The 2025 Seal EV will be the first sedan model built on BYD’s upgraded e-Platform 3.0 Evo architecture,” Zhang Zhuo, general manager of BYD’s Ocean series sales, announced on Weibo. This platform, unveiled on May 10, promises higher integration, improved powertrain performance, and better charging capabilities. The 12-in-1 electric drive system in the new platform surpasses the 8-in-1 system of the previous e-Platform 3.0.

Over the past week, BYD has previewed the 2025 Seal EV, releasing images that show it will feature LiDAR technology.

The Seal 07 DM-i hybrid will incorporate BYD’s fifth-generation DM technology, expected to set new standards in fuel consumption and range. “The hybrid Seal 07 DM-i will achieve new breakthroughs in fuel consumption and range among its class,” Zhang stated.

BYD introduced its DM 5.0 hybrid technology on May 28, offering lower fuel consumption. The Seal 06 DM-i and Qin L DM-i, the first models with this technology, boast a combined range of over 2,000 kilometers.
