Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD set a new sales record in December, surpassing 4 million units in annual sales for the first time. The company sold 514,809 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in December, marking the third instance it has exceeded the 500,000 mark and the seventh consecutive month of record sales, according to data released by BYD.
This December’s figure represents a 50.95% year-on-year increase from 341,043 units in the same month last year and a 1.58% increase from the previous month’s sales of 506,804 units. In 2024, BYD’s total NEV sales reached 4,272,145 units, reflecting a 41.26% year-on-year increase. Passenger vehicles made up the bulk of the sales, with 4,250,370 units delivered, an increase of 41.07% compared to the previous year.
For the full year, BYD’s passenger battery electric vehicles (BEVs) reached 1,764,992 units, up 12.08% year-on-year, while passenger plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) saw a substantial 72.83% increase, totaling 2,485,378 units. In addition, BYD’s commercial NEV sales increased by 89.17% year-on-year to 21,775 units.
The company also reported significant international expansion, with 417,204 units sold overseas in 2024, a 71.86% increase from the previous year.
In terms of battery production, BYD’s installed capacity of power and energy storage batteries grew to 194.705 GWh for the year, representing a 29.02% increase from 2023.
