BYD announced record sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in June, boosting its second-quarter performance to new heights amid a robust global demand for electric vehicles.
BYD sold 341,658 NEVs last month, surpassing its previous record set in December 2023, according to company figures released on Tuesday. This marks a 35.02% increase from the same period last year and a 2.97% rise from May. The company ceased production of internal combustion engine vehicles in March 2022, shifting its focus entirely to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

BYD’s passenger NEVs accounted for 340,211 units sold in June, reflecting a 35.17% year-on-year increase and a 2.94% increase from May. Meanwhile, its commercial NEV sales reached 1,447 units, up 6.32% from a year ago and 8.88% from May.
The automaker reported sales of 145,179 units of passenger BEVs in June, marking a 13.25% increase year-on-year, though a slight decline of 0.83% from May. Passenger PHEVs, on the other hand, achieved a record high of 195,032 units sold, up 57.93% year-on-year and 5.94% month-on-month since May.

For the second quarter, BYD reported a total of 986,720 NEV sales, up 40.25% year-on-year and 57.56% from the first quarter. Passenger NEVs accounted for 982,747 units, up 40.34% year-on-year, while commercial NEVs totaled 3,973 units, showing a 19.78% increase year-on-year.
For the first half of the year, BYD reported total NEV sales of 1,612,983 units, up 28.46% year-on-year. Passenger NEVs contributed 1,607,145 units, up 28.76% year-on-year, while commercial NEVs totaled 5,838 units, down 21.91% year-on-year.

Passenger BEVs saw sales of 726,153 units in the first half, up 17.73% year-on-year, and passenger PHEVs reached 880,992 units, up 39.54% year-on-year. Overseas sales totaled 203,404 units, up 173.80% year-on-year.
BYD’s installed base of power and energy storage batteries amounted to approximately 72.555 GWh in the first half of the year, marking a 20.42% increase year-on-year.
