BYD said on Monday that its Seal U DM-i plug-in hybrid SUV has surpassed 10,000 sales in the UK less than a year after its debut, making it the country’s best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle.
The model has become BYD UK’s top seller, helping the Chinese automaker reach a cumulative 30,000 sales since launching in the British market in 2023. The milestone comes as the company accelerates efforts to grow its share in Europe through electric and hybrid offerings.
“The Seal U DM-i’s fantastic sales statistics show how the British public are responding in ever greater numbers to our brand proposition, taking the opportunity to move to our affordable new energy vehicle with confidence,” said Steve Beattie, Sales and Marketing Director at BYD UK.
The Seal U DM-i is equipped with BYD’s dual-mode plug-in hybrid system that prioritises electric driving and combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine when needed. Depending on battery size, the SUV offers up to 77 miles of electric-only range and a total driving range of nearly 700 miles. All versions are priced under £40,000, avoiding the higher-rate vehicle excise duty supplement.
BYD has positioned the SUV as a volume model in the UK market, with pricing, range and specifications aimed at mainstream buyers. The company said its expanding retailer network and product portfolio would provide the foundation for further growth.
