BYD expects its sales performance this year to be largely determined by battery production capacity, with a more significant release of volume expected in 2027 as manufacturing bottlenecks ease, according to Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu.

Speaking at BYD’s annual shareholder meeting on Tuesday, Wang said the company’s battery production remains under pressure following the introduction of its second-generation Blade Battery and ultra-fast charging technology. The event attracted about 1,000 attendees, a record turnout for the company, according to The Paper reports.

Battery Capacity Remains the Key Constraint

Wang said BYD’s latest battery technologies have addressed one of the biggest challenges facing electric vehicle adoption and have received strong recognition both in China and overseas.

“As our battery capacity increases, I believe there will be good output this year,” Wang said.

“Once our capacity ramps up well next year, I believe both the domestic and international markets will drive growth simultaneously.”

According to Wang, battery production capacity is currently increasing by approximately 20,000 to 30,000 units per month as the company works to meet demand.

BYD is prioritizing investment and resources in its battery division to unlock the full production potential of the second-generation Blade Battery platform.

Production Line Upgrades Impact Deliveries

The current supply constraints stem largely from BYD’s transition from the first-generation Blade Battery to the newer version equipped with ultra-fast charging capabilities.

The manufacturing upgrade process has affected delivery schedules for several key vehicle models as production lines are reconfigured to support the new battery technology.

BYD officially unveiled the second-generation Blade Battery in March. The battery supports charging from 10% to 70% state of charge in approximately five minutes and can reach 97% charge in about nine minutes under suitable conditions.

The technology is paired with BYD’s new megawatt-class charging platform designed to significantly reduce charging times for future electric vehicles.

Sales Show Signs of Recovery

As production line upgrades neared completion in May, BYD began seeing improvements in sales performance.

The company recorded wholesale sales of 383,453 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in May, representing a modest 0.26% increase compared with the same month last year.

The result ended an eight-month period of year-on-year sales declines.

International markets continued to be a major growth driver, with overseas sales reaching a record 160,644 units during the month.

The strong export performance reflects BYD’s ongoing expansion across Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and other international markets.

New Models Target Premium Segments

BYD is also seeking to strengthen growth through an expanded lineup of premium and flagship vehicles.

The company plans to officially launch the Da Tang EV, a full-size flagship SUV in BYD’s Dynasty series, on June 17.

The model carries a pre-sale price range of 250,000 yuan ($34,800) to 320,000 yuan ($44,500). According to BYD, pre-orders surpassed 100,000 units within two weeks of the launch campaign.

The Da Tang EV features the second-generation Blade Battery and offers a claimed maximum driving range of up to 950 kilometers. It also incorporates BYD’s latest flash-charging technology with peak charging power reaching 1,000 kW.

In addition, the company is preparing to launch the N8L Flash-Charging Edition under its premium Denza brand later this month.

The large SUV has a pre-sale price range of 350,000 yuan to 400,000 yuan and forms part of BYD’s broader strategy to expand its presence in higher-priced market segments.

With battery production gradually increasing and several new models entering the market, BYD expects capacity constraints to ease over the coming months, potentially providing stronger momentum for both domestic and international sales growth.
