BYD Plans Entry into Canadian Auto Market Amid Potential Tariffs

BYD is preparing to enter the Canadian automotive market, according to a regulatory filing made earlier this month. The move comes as Canada considers imposing tariffs on electric vehicles (EVs) imported from China.

Reuters reported that while the filing did not provide a specific timeline for BYD’s market entry, it did address the potential impact of tariffs on the company’s plans to introduce passenger EVs in Canada. The report also noted that BYD Canada, a subsidiary of the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer, has been engaging with Canadian government officials.

Additionally, BYD has recently hired lobbyists to navigate the Canadian market and address potential tariff issues, according to Automotive News. The company is also beginning to establish sales channels by approaching Canadian auto dealers.

The Canadian government initiated a 30-day consultation period on July 2 to evaluate potential restrictions, including tariffs on EVs imported from China. This follows similar actions by the United States and the European Union. The consultations will explore policy responses such as surtaxes and adjustments to the federal Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) program.

BYD currently operates factories in the U.S. that produce electric buses and trucks but has not yet entered the U.S. passenger car market. The company has stated previously that it does not have plans to enter this segment in the U.S. BYD also launched its first pickup truck model, the BYD Shark, in Mexico in May, marking a significant new product introduction in an overseas market.
